Technology is changing how work is done, completed and measured.

Some examples are:

  1. Digital Delivery (Telemedicine): The traditional model of healthcare involves a doctor personally examining and treating patients. This model is now being transformed by technology. Apollo is currently doing this through an app Apollo 24x7 - integrating doctor consultations, lab tests and pharmacy. Similarly account opening for Banks is now fully digital with virtual KYC and / or penny drop mechanisms.

  2. Robotic workforce: Most of the work from low skilled to highly skilled is being handled by robots. Most hospitals are now deploying robotic surgeries which can be highly automated. At the same time, in industrial production, jobs like welding, painting can be fully handled by robots. While there is anxiety and concern about the advent of robotic surgeons, the reliability and effectiveness of these technologies need to be established before widespread adoption.

  3. Automation: Automation is playing a significant role in transforming work. Repetitive and routine tasks are being automated, leading to increased productivity and reduced errors. Chatbots are being deployed with advanced machine learning tools that can help customers navigate their services with minimal human touch.

Remote work has become an option post COVID. Digital technologies are being used to make data-driven decisions. Large-scale analysis is conducted before making decisions in various tasks. Various tools are facilitating collaboration in organizations. Organizations need to learn how to use these technologies as they digitally transform themselves.

Complementarities refer to the idea that to leverage or transform work, it is not enough to simply implement technology. Instead, managers need to focus on transforming other functions that interact with these technologies, such as marketing, human resources, and other processes. By understanding and leveraging the complementarities inherent in digital technologies, organizations can achieve better results in their digital transformations.

  • Complementarities can be handled by revising /elevating job roles (For e.g. How does a digital marketer from making creatives to thinking what to do and how to achieve that)

Substitution, on the other hand, involves replacing certain tasks or processes with digital technologies. This can lead to increased efficiency and productivity. However, it is important to carefully consider the implications of substitution and ensure that the right tasks are being automated or digitized.

  • Identifying which processes can be handled by technology (Mining, Manual Scavenging etc) keeping in mind the threat to livelihoods.
