Basics of Digital Transformation

Three types of purpose organizations need to consider in the context of digital transformation:

1. Instrumental Purpose: This type of purpose answers the question of what is the nature of digital transformation. It focuses on the specific goals, objectives, and outcomes that an organization aims to achieve through digital transformation. The instrumental purpose helps define the direction and scope of the transformation efforts. It guides decision-making and resource allocation towards the desired outcomes.

   
   

2. Operational Purpose: The operational purpose addresses the question of how an organization will organize, arrange, and execute the digital transformation initiatives. It involves designing and implementing the necessary processes, systems, and structures to support the transformation. The operational purpose ensures that the organization has the right capabilities, resources, and strategies in place to effectively carry out the transformation.

   
   

3. Existential Purpose: The existential purpose deals with the question of why an organization should undergo digital transformation. It goes beyond the immediate goals and outcomes and delves into the deeper motivations and values that drive the transformation. The existential purpose reflects the organization's vision, mission, and long-term aspirations. It provides a sense of purpose and meaning to the digital transformation efforts, inspiring and aligning stakeholders towards a common goal.
