Vitruvius identified three aspects of traditional architectures:
Firmitas (Strength): This aspect represents the vigor (strength) and robustness of a particular architecture. It refers to the structural integrity and the ability of an architecture to withstand external forces.
In the context of digital architectures, firmitas refers to the vigor or strength of the architecture. It represents the robustness and resilience of the digital infrastructure, including its ability to handle large volumes of data, withstand cyber threats, and adapt to technological advancements.
For e.g. e-commerce platform is designed to handle high volumes of online transactions ensuring the system's stability and reliability. The architecture is built to scale and accommodate increasing user traffic during peak periods, such as festive seasons or sales events. Robust cybersecurity measures are implemented to protect customer data and prevent unauthorized access.
Utilitas (Functionality): This aspect focuses on the functional purpose of an architecture. It emphasizes that every architecture is built for a reason and serves a specific goal. It is associated with the utility and usefulness of the architecture.
Utilitas in digital architectures relates to the customer-centricity and functional purpose of the architecture. It focuses on how the architecture enables efficient and effective digital operations, enhances user experience, and supports the achievement of business goals.
In the example of e-commerce, a user-friendly interface for easy navigation and seamless shopping experiences, personalized recommendations, search filters, and easy checkout processes to enhance user satisfaction and convenience and efficient inventory management, order processing, and logistics integration to ensure timely delivery of products form the utilitas.
Venustas (Aesthetics and Environment): This aspect relates to the aesthetic sense and beauty of an architecture. It considers how the architecture fits into its environment and creates a pleasing visual impact. It emphasizes the harmony between the architecture and its surroundings.
Venustas in digital architectures considers the aesthetic appeal and how the architecture fits into its digital environment. It involves designing user-friendly interfaces, creating visually appealing digital assets, and ensuring seamless integration with other digital systems.
In the same example, a well-designed and intuitive user interface that aligns with the company's brand identity, optimized for different devices and screen sizes and integration with social media platforms, allowing users to share products and reviews, creating a sense of community and engagement ensures the venustas.
